Animatic

The idea that I have decided to follow through, is the dance love story of a couple who concur their differences in backgrounds and character by expressing their passion for dance. I have demonstrated what the music video should conclude through the animatic. However, with feedback from the rough cut, I would be able to make improvements to the music video. In order to understand the characters mise en scene allows the audience to immediately recognise the idea of the separation of social classes. The animatic is the illustration and understanding of the different camera angles and shots that I would replicate in the music video. Furthermore, cut scene would be overlapped during the dance performance, which allows different backgrounds that they are representing. The dance performance is intended to keep the audience engaged in the video, although it is a slow tempo song with a calming/relaxed tone the dance routine would inject power and love to whoever is listening. Confirm to the codes and conventions of R&B music video, it is essential that the star image is implicated, showing the artist performs. I will use a range of camera angles and shots in order to see the artist introducing him to the music industry, different location and setting, appropriate customs which relate to the genre and what I will attempt to portray him like

The first scene would be the introduction of the main characters. During the beginning where it is setting the story the music video would begin with a black and white filter and diegetic music. We listen to the sounds of her footsteps the busy background noises of cars as charlotte walks down the street heading towards the dance studio. I will use tracking and panning shot, starting from the bottom of her feet moving up to a side profile of her face. Through that shot the audience get a chance to analyse the character’s style and body gesture. On the other side of the spectrum, Kendrick is traveling on the bus heading to the dance studio, however, not as a dance but as an employee, as they are both traveling to the same destination but with different intentions. The main feature to identify Kendrick's class status is through the camera shots that are illustrated, while is Kendrick is sitting on the bus and an over the shoulder shot of him looking outside the window, this implies that he is in the moment of reflection or sadness. During these two scenes editing the footage into slow motion would ease the audience into the song.

Charlotte enters the studio and prepares herself for the practice, and long shot of her setting up the sound system, warming by performing breathing excises presented by a medium shot then followed by a close up of her face, ready to show her dancing prowess. Whatever Charlotte is doing I will also replicate with Kendrick, as removes his coat in the staff room using long shot where we are able to see the characters body language also analyse his dressing style. Kendrick begins to work, whilst he walk around with a cleaning cart, long shots represent what he does and the difference in their daily lives. We get a close up of him approaching the door where the music is coming from and there the embedded music would overlap the music being played in the background would begin to play. At point of view shot, represents the typical voyeuristic aspect of the male gaze, Kendrick looks on at her performing and a long shot of her performing.

During these long shots we are able to see her body movements on the dance floor, keeping the audience engaged I will use a range of camera shots and angles as she performs, illustrating the art that is contemporary dancing. For example, low angle shots which can exaggerate leaps and jumps. Suddenly the music instantly cuts off, as she tumbles on to the ground, a close up of Kendrick in shock horror, as she is potentially hurt. His instant reaction is dashing across the room to help her out. Panning shot of approaching her, during this scene the music has cut of only use of diegetic sounds as the audience get to be enticed into high adrenaline of the scene. I will use a close up shot of him reaching for her hand and picking her up, drawing her closer to his body. This will reach the ultimate climax of affection and love that I aim to portray, an instant connection as he has been watching her perform. This element of love is complying to codes and conventions of a R&B and Soul Music Genre.

Gradually the tempo of the music begins to increase corresponding with the music video, during this section there are substantial amount of changes to the music video, as the black and white filter begins to fade and changing in to coloured filter, hence the concept of lighting up the dark, conforming to the notion that is placed by Andrew Goodwin applying the visuals to the music. Although we have seen the contrast of their social status, we are able to recognize more about them in cut scenes, during the duet dance performance.

Close up of Charlotte, relaxing with her friends in a sophisticated cafe.
Kendrick and his friends walking around aimlessly. In this shot we also see his clothes and the type of style and social group that Kendrick is associated with and this representation amplifies his appearance and his character.
A shot of Kendrick and Charlotte illustrating their hobbies apart from dancing, see Kendrick on the basketball court and Charlotte obsession with shopping.

Lastly, we are able to see the artist himself performing on a piano, insuring that I conform to main star image, by Andrew Goodwin. Close ups and mid shots would be the dominate camera shot, this would attract the female stars to the artist, insuring that he is good looking and has a similar style as the seen with the genre. A long shot that will show "Otty" with his arm spread out and hitting the high note to conclude the climax of the song.
