Treatment

The narrative that i have concluded to move forward with is contemporary dancing based narrative  include a cut scene narrative within the music video. This would show two different characters from different backgrounds that have a silent anecdote and their relationship is built on the idea of dance. The sharing of the passion dance would form a relationship between them. The mise en scene is vital to illustrate the social status, their body gestures, there dress scene and the places that they are both situated at the times as they are show during the cut scenes. Lower class would be more associated with home, streets and attempt of pulling away from social strain in the means of popularity and criminality. On the other hand Middle class character would be portrayed as happy, in location shots such as cafes, luxurious home and expensive product. Different angle shots are used for the viewer to see the perspective of the more superior class. This idea implies that although people are in different parts hierarchy social structure as long as people share the same desires.

This Idea meets the criteria of the codes and conventions of an R&B and Soul Music video would require. Being able to portray the lyrics of the song to the visuals on the screen is important, however adding a narrative within the video, illustrating a montage of the two different lives in order to tell a love story would suit the target audience. As the narrative shows that two different social classes are capable to become one is important to show that message. As music opens up to wide range of audience, the narrative is trying to state the aspiration character which some of the audience can relate to and the other character who relates to the succeders of the market who shows the wealthy side of the relationship, with expensive clothing, being in extravagant locations and being associated with people similar to the character. The audience would mainly be experiences looking at an average age of 25 theses people would have  lot energy hence the dance video. The video is able to bring their own personal experiences corresponding to the lyrics in the way that people are able to re light their personal relationships.

At the beginning of the music video, there shan't be any music played over as it will begin to introduce the characters and their background. In the first scene we Charlotte walking down the main road on her way to the dance studio where she practices regularly, as she purses her dreams to become a professional  Slow motion, the camera shot would be a close up tracking shot of her feet and it would gradually start to ascend to a close up of her handbag, this should be visual to the viewer so they are able to see the expensive brand and quality emphasizing her status. Then eventually we are able to see the face of the actress. during this scene there would be no music and its diegetic music, so the viewer are able to feel the atmosphere and the verisimilitude of the scene.  Similarly with the working class character, Kendrick, the audience are able to analyse his status by his clothing, location and people he is associated with. We see how he carries out his journey to the dance studio, however not as a participating dance but a worker.

As she enters the building it is important to get continuity from the stages of her getting to the performance room, her preparations for her solo practice performance. And Kendrick's preparation for his job. Kendrick would hear the music from the performance room playing and he would follow it then the music would start to fade over the video to have the clear audio. Tacking a point of view shot from Kendrick's perspective we are able to see the Charlotte performing which would introduce the voyeuristic nature of the male gaze. Long shots of her interpreting the music and putting into to dance form. A close up of Kendrick's face as he admires her art form. However in the first process Charlotte would tumble over the the music should cut, which would be the illustration of the visuals to the music. An intimidate dash of panic from Kendrick would occur and that moment a long shot panning movement would carry him towards Charlotte to help her up. Close up of his hands lifting her up and and a close up the eye line matching enforcing the sense of solidarity between the two character and a point of intimacy. After the scene to show an equilibrium between the character i would show a two shot which implies an instant spark between the two characters forming a relationship. Then suddenly, the music begins again and he begin showing his dance moves and together they would start to dance. I would essentially use range of shots in order to see the elegant movement of the dances such a low angles, tracking shot and close ups.

In the other cut scene there is a difference in the direction as the audience are able to see the actor who is portraying the artist. The main feature within R&B music video is the star image, this would be shown by close ups and mid shots. here we shall see the artist performing alone on the piano similar to the sound of the music, as this would demonstrate his skills as an artist. I would expect the artist to wear formal/casual clothing, which would have the representation of both social class, insuring the audience have someone to associate with. When the tempo is low and the volume is also low, I want to show more of the artist in order to have the more dramatic parts with high tempo and volume shown with the dancers as they are able to bring an overall excitement and keep the audience engaged of an gripping performance.

Linking with the visuals of song, editing would be very important as i attempt to start the song with a blank and white filter as the music and the video gradually goes on at a point where there is a high increase in volume the black and white filter will begin to fade into colored filter. This takes on the reference of the lyrics "we can light up the dark." Emphasizing the tittle of the song. The reason why I have chosen this narrative is because it is feasible  and maintaining the codes and conventions of the genre would allow me to hit the specific target market, with high level of criticism if drastic changes are made to the type of music video.
