Shot list

Most of the shots I will use will be long shot, this was for the dance scene, this will allow the audience to see graceful performance through out. The main feature of this would be using camera movements this will allow the music video to flow naturally with the slow tempo of the song. The mid shots are would be more effective for the artist performance on the piano, as the main idea is to create a brand identity and it would be done so by using close ups and mid shots.

Filming schedule

The main production of my music video took place during November and December. Using this time period I would hope to take advantage of the dark and grey colours which would reflect to a calm and subtle visionary. The lighting would create a certain ambience which suites the genre of souls, that has a similar link with blues. With the different locations that I managed to get access to their gave me specific dates that I would be able to use the performance rooms. I have to insure that the cast are informed with good time in order to meet the dates.

My first part of product took place on November 21st 2013, on this day was beginning the secondary bases of my music video. This is where the dance Gabby is able to tell a story with her dancing. We were able to set up and use out time effectively, with the location being used as a performance space, there was a variation of lighting and setting that I could use, i went for the more simplistic bright spot light which concentrates on the dancer. While filming I sued a minimum amount of shots, such as long shots, high and low angle and one type of camera movement panning shot. It was evident that the flow of transition was not smooth, as there was no specific dance set in mind, which I aim to improve for the final cut, and this would require two camera tacking these different shots from different angles and one dance routine which can be repeated and merged.

After the feedback it is important that I took that relevant information and use to act onto the final cut. And using this information I wanted to instantly act upon the feedback to move forward and to see if there are another improvements are need to made despite the feedback December the 18th I took the opportunity to start the main body of the product, where the artist would be performing the song while playing the piano although there wasn’t similar lighting to the previous location, there was a lot of natural light that bring the colours out more. Here there was large amount of camera movements and angles. It began the challenge of lip synchronisation, there are important that the music was playing in the background so that there is a chance wile editing to identify where the music that is edited over goes to which part.

After this part of the production after editing I realised that there were parts that I could improve on such as the lip synchronisation of the artist. It was important that I would able to see the emphasis in the mouthing of the lyrics due to the low quality and the dark lighting. At the same time I had to do the dancing part of the production again this was to see get range of camera angles and movements. Although I managed to keep some of the footage from the previous production due to the high angle shots and long shots which worked effectively.

Costumes

With the costumes for the music video, it was important that I was associating with my target audience, predominantly females. So making the music video as appealing to them as possible. It is important that there is a level of class, which would suit with the genre of the music. Using other artist, such as Ne-Yo, John Legend and Usher show a great level of maturity and class with their style which would be perfectly fitting for my artist whom has that similar look. Sex appeal has become a major part of the music industry and the more appealing that artist and his promotion packages the more sales they tend to get.

For my artist I decided to go for the more smart casual appeal in the music video, although there is a level of class about the artist there treatment for the music suggest that there isn’t a need for large audience and performance. This implies that there isn’t a equipment for formal wear, as in Justin Timberlake’s music video ‘’Suits and Tie’’ During his stage performance he was a wearing a Tom Ford tuxedo, however in other parts of the music video, when he in the studio or of stage, he is wearing casual clothes. Which I will be putting a mixture of both the elements and having a smart casual factor. With Suit jacket which would be the main part of the smart and casual jeans and a basic white shirt.

For the dancer, it is important that the dance feels comfortable in what she is wearing.  That she is able to more efficiently in her outfit, so it I went for the basic look where she able to exaggerate the body shapes and her body is defined to show them shapes. We went for a basic green, large crop top and for the bottoms it would be black leggings and shorts underneath. The green would be more defined in the artificial light that would be in the centre of the dance floor. My dancer (Gabby) is a ballet dancer, there are similarities between contemporary dance and ballet, removing some of the basic structure of ballet and adding more freedom to the contemporary was effective, such as the outfit which maybe manufacture for specific product, choosing a loser and more relaxed outfit would be represent the style of song simplicity.

As we were filming during December, gabby took an acting role as she walked towards her dance studio. The weather would tend to be cold and wet, a coat to show amplify the time of year, similar with the use of the pink umbrella. The umbrella has the contrast in colours as the environment as it is brighter colour to a grey ambience, it pops out the screen which links the visuals to the lyrics ‘’Light up the dark.’’ The dark coat as well subtracts more of the lighter colours.

Props

This is the only  piece of instrument that I used in my music video. The acoustic recording of the piano was part of the music and the main idea was to make sure that is the main feature in the music video as the artist himself plays the piano. The Yamaha grand piano was my original idea, I was demanding this write from the moment I chose my final songs, with this I would be able to meet the codes and conventions of the genre.
I believe that this was the main selling point for my location making it perfect, exactly as I imagined it and to get this I had to negotiate with a University in order to use this space and I was successful enough to do so and it made it more of a industrial scale music video.

The second piece of prop would  be the pink umbrella, with this intend to bring forward the bright colours of the umbrella and saturate the rest of the colours in the video as gabby is walking down to the road. I aim to test my editing skills by doing so.

locaction

The location for the music video was an important feature for the music video it is vital that it replicate my vision as it works well with he song and the narrative. Accessing my location was a complex situation, I had to know the right people in order to gain the best possible location for my music video. One of the major locations was a dance performance room, and the one I managed to gain access to have laminate flooring and a large mirror feature wall, where I am able to get a reflection of the dancers. By emailing studio, I final managed to negotiate a successfully, what I would require for my music video, such as time, music and lighting, this would create the right ambiance that I would require to meet the specification of my genre and song.

My second location would be based in a different studio where there is open space and the access to a grand piano, here is where my artist would be able to perform and show is talent and musical process. This emphasis the idea of talent and performance, from the dances of the narrative to the artist himself, the space would sure express the artist. Majority of my inspiration from John legend's music video as it fits in with a similar music genre.

Using the natural light, I am to get shots on public transport, hence the idea of traveling from one location to another telling a story as they are looking for someone to light up the dark that’s in their hearts. As the character show how they feel empty as there are alone and looking for someone to be with. Locations such as  a cafĂ© or park depending on the character and the background, it is important that the location opens up the characters background and that there feeling about the other person are about.

Animatic

The idea that I have decided to follow through, is the dance love story of a couple who concur their differences in backgrounds and character by expressing their passion for dance. I have demonstrated what the music video should conclude through the animatic. However, with feedback from the rough cut, I would be able to make improvements to the music video. In order to understand the characters mise en scene allows the audience to immediately recognise the idea of the separation of social classes. The animatic is the illustration and understanding of the different camera angles and shots that I would replicate in the music video. Furthermore, cut scene would be overlapped during the dance performance, which allows different backgrounds that they are representing. The dance performance is intended to keep the audience engaged in the video, although it is a slow tempo song with a calming/relaxed tone the dance routine would inject power and love to whoever is listening. Confirm to the codes and conventions of R&B music video, it is essential that the star image is implicated, showing the artist performs. I will use a range of camera angles and shots in order to see the artist introducing him to the music industry, different location and setting, appropriate customs which relate to the genre and what I will attempt to portray him like

The first scene would be the introduction of the main characters. During the beginning where it is setting the story the music video would begin with a black and white filter and diegetic music. We listen to the sounds of her footsteps the busy background noises of cars as charlotte walks down the street heading towards the dance studio. I will use tracking and panning shot, starting from the bottom of her feet moving up to a side profile of her face. Through that shot the audience get a chance to analyse the character’s style and body gesture. On the other side of the spectrum, Kendrick is traveling on the bus heading to the dance studio, however, not as a dance but as an employee, as they are both traveling to the same destination but with different intentions. The main feature to identify Kendrick's class status is through the camera shots that are illustrated, while is Kendrick is sitting on the bus and an over the shoulder shot of him looking outside the window, this implies that he is in the moment of reflection or sadness. During these two scenes editing the footage into slow motion would ease the audience into the song.

Charlotte enters the studio and prepares herself for the practice, and long shot of her setting up the sound system, warming by performing breathing excises presented by a medium shot then followed by a close up of her face, ready to show her dancing prowess. Whatever Charlotte is doing I will also replicate with Kendrick, as removes his coat in the staff room using long shot where we are able to see the characters body language also analyse his dressing style. Kendrick begins to work, whilst he walk around with a cleaning cart, long shots represent what he does and the difference in their daily lives. We get a close up of him approaching the door where the music is coming from and there the embedded music would overlap the music being played in the background would begin to play. At point of view shot, represents the typical voyeuristic aspect of the male gaze, Kendrick looks on at her performing and a long shot of her performing.

During these long shots we are able to see her body movements on the dance floor, keeping the audience engaged I will use a range of camera shots and angles as she performs, illustrating the art that is contemporary dancing. For example, low angle shots which can exaggerate leaps and jumps. Suddenly the music instantly cuts off, as she tumbles on to the ground, a close up of Kendrick in shock horror, as she is potentially hurt. His instant reaction is dashing across the room to help her out. Panning shot of approaching her, during this scene the music has cut of only use of diegetic sounds as the audience get to be enticed into high adrenaline of the scene. I will use a close up shot of him reaching for her hand and picking her up, drawing her closer to his body. This will reach the ultimate climax of affection and love that I aim to portray, an instant connection as he has been watching her perform. This element of love is complying to codes and conventions of a R&B and Soul Music Genre.

Gradually the tempo of the music begins to increase corresponding with the music video, during this section there are substantial amount of changes to the music video, as the black and white filter begins to fade and changing in to coloured filter, hence the concept of lighting up the dark, conforming to the notion that is placed by Andrew Goodwin applying the visuals to the music. Although we have seen the contrast of their social status, we are able to recognize more about them in cut scenes, during the duet dance performance.

Close up of Charlotte, relaxing with her friends in a sophisticated cafe.
Kendrick and his friends walking around aimlessly. In this shot we also see his clothes and the type of style and social group that Kendrick is associated with and this representation amplifies his appearance and his character.
A shot of Kendrick and Charlotte illustrating their hobbies apart from dancing, see Kendrick on the basketball court and Charlotte obsession with shopping.

Lastly, we are able to see the artist himself performing on a piano, insuring that I conform to main star image, by Andrew Goodwin. Close ups and mid shots would be the dominate camera shot, this would attract the female stars to the artist, insuring that he is good looking and has a similar style as the seen with the genre. A long shot that will show "Otty" with his arm spread out and hitting the high note to conclude the climax of the song.

Treatment

The narrative that i have concluded to move forward with is contemporary dancing based narrative  include a cut scene narrative within the music video. This would show two different characters from different backgrounds that have a silent anecdote and their relationship is built on the idea of dance. The sharing of the passion dance would form a relationship between them. The mise en scene is vital to illustrate the social status, their body gestures, there dress scene and the places that they are both situated at the times as they are show during the cut scenes. Lower class would be more associated with home, streets and attempt of pulling away from social strain in the means of popularity and criminality. On the other hand Middle class character would be portrayed as happy, in location shots such as cafes, luxurious home and expensive product. Different angle shots are used for the viewer to see the perspective of the more superior class. This idea implies that although people are in different parts hierarchy social structure as long as people share the same desires.

This Idea meets the criteria of the codes and conventions of an R&B and Soul Music video would require. Being able to portray the lyrics of the song to the visuals on the screen is important, however adding a narrative within the video, illustrating a montage of the two different lives in order to tell a love story would suit the target audience. As the narrative shows that two different social classes are capable to become one is important to show that message. As music opens up to wide range of audience, the narrative is trying to state the aspiration character which some of the audience can relate to and the other character who relates to the succeders of the market who shows the wealthy side of the relationship, with expensive clothing, being in extravagant locations and being associated with people similar to the character. The audience would mainly be experiences looking at an average age of 25 theses people would have  lot energy hence the dance video. The video is able to bring their own personal experiences corresponding to the lyrics in the way that people are able to re light their personal relationships.

At the beginning of the music video, there shan't be any music played over as it will begin to introduce the characters and their background. In the first scene we Charlotte walking down the main road on her way to the dance studio where she practices regularly, as she purses her dreams to become a professional  Slow motion, the camera shot would be a close up tracking shot of her feet and it would gradually start to ascend to a close up of her handbag, this should be visual to the viewer so they are able to see the expensive brand and quality emphasizing her status. Then eventually we are able to see the face of the actress. during this scene there would be no music and its diegetic music, so the viewer are able to feel the atmosphere and the verisimilitude of the scene.  Similarly with the working class character, Kendrick, the audience are able to analyse his status by his clothing, location and people he is associated with. We see how he carries out his journey to the dance studio, however not as a participating dance but a worker.

As she enters the building it is important to get continuity from the stages of her getting to the performance room, her preparations for her solo practice performance. And Kendrick's preparation for his job. Kendrick would hear the music from the performance room playing and he would follow it then the music would start to fade over the video to have the clear audio. Tacking a point of view shot from Kendrick's perspective we are able to see the Charlotte performing which would introduce the voyeuristic nature of the male gaze. Long shots of her interpreting the music and putting into to dance form. A close up of Kendrick's face as he admires her art form. However in the first process Charlotte would tumble over the the music should cut, which would be the illustration of the visuals to the music. An intimidate dash of panic from Kendrick would occur and that moment a long shot panning movement would carry him towards Charlotte to help her up. Close up of his hands lifting her up and and a close up the eye line matching enforcing the sense of solidarity between the two character and a point of intimacy. After the scene to show an equilibrium between the character i would show a two shot which implies an instant spark between the two characters forming a relationship. Then suddenly, the music begins again and he begin showing his dance moves and together they would start to dance. I would essentially use range of shots in order to see the elegant movement of the dances such a low angles, tracking shot and close ups.

In the other cut scene there is a difference in the direction as the audience are able to see the actor who is portraying the artist. The main feature within R&B music video is the star image, this would be shown by close ups and mid shots. here we shall see the artist performing alone on the piano similar to the sound of the music, as this would demonstrate his skills as an artist. I would expect the artist to wear formal/casual clothing, which would have the representation of both social class, insuring the audience have someone to associate with. When the tempo is low and the volume is also low, I want to show more of the artist in order to have the more dramatic parts with high tempo and volume shown with the dancers as they are able to bring an overall excitement and keep the audience engaged of an gripping performance.

Linking with the visuals of song, editing would be very important as i attempt to start the song with a blank and white filter as the music and the video gradually goes on at a point where there is a high increase in volume the black and white filter will begin to fade into colored filter. This takes on the reference of the lyrics "we can light up the dark." Emphasizing the tittle of the song. The reason why I have chosen this narrative is because it is feasible  and maintaining the codes and conventions of the genre would allow me to hit the specific target market, with high level of criticism if drastic changes are made to the type of music video.

Target Audience For the R&B and Soul

Classifying the audience for the music genre is very difficult, there are lot people whom may look different to what type of music they associate themselves with, making the more challenging to define the people who are interested in the genre. After looking into the genre of soul music there was a sub genre within soul music which is neo soul. It is described as style of music that emerged from soul and contemporary R&B. Heavily based in soul music, neo soul is distinguished by a less conventional sound than its contemporary R&B counterpart, with incorporated elements ranging from jazz, funk, and hip hop to pop, fusion, and African music. It has been noted by music writers for its traditional R&B influences, conscious-driven lyrics, and strong female presence.

The more popular neo soul artists in recent years have included John Legend, Anthony Hamilton, Jill Scott, Maxwell, Chrisette Michele, Leela James, and Raheem DeVaughn. This is the category would place my artist in and these is the type of audience I would also describe him to connect with.

Young and Rebucam's describes four types of consumers there is the mainstreamer who take up 40% of the population. They like security and belonging to a certain group. Then there is the Aspires, who want status symbols , designer labels and live off credit and cash this would be more associated with the hip hop genre. And finally the REFORMERS who are define themselves by their self-esteem and self-fulfilment, this category would be the best to describe the neo soul genre.

The neo soul target audience can be classed as the strivers they are the low resources group of those who are motivated by achievements. they have values very similar to achiever but have fewer incomes social and psychological resources. style is extremely important to them as they strive to emulate people they admire.

Ideas For Music Video

There are various concepts that I am able to adapt the ideas and make them my own, taking little inspiration form Music video such as Suit and Tie and Ordinary people it would enable me to understand what different fundamentals I need to meet when constructing my own music video.  The essential part is interpreting the lyrics and applying them to the music video, using Goodwin’s theory of illustrative between the lyrics and the visuals.  Thinking about ideas that are able to meet these criteria would consist of the codes and conventions of the genre, which I plan to maintain rather than challenge as it would be able to meet the intended targets desires and previous similar songs have been successful in the past.

Idea 1
Identifying the constant theme of love and relationship between R&B and soul songs, an option to show a beginning of romance from a young age which slowly develops and there is there a moment of equilibrium between the characters in the narrative. And being able to resolve their problems  is a way to interpreted the lyrics to a literal sense, as the song is slow pace I am to maintain  that pace would suggest the more love shared between the characters. The location and setting would be sourly based domestically; this implies the normality which is equally shared with every relationship. Using a small range of camera shots would enable the viewer to become part of the relationship as there are able to have the interaction with the characters as seeing as they were there.

Idea 2
I would endeavor to take the opportunity to use dancing in a way to illustrate story, as done so with groups in contemporary dancing. However, not only that, to make the music video a more intriguing for the viewer is to include a cut scene narrative within the music video.

Idea 3

Having the main singer as the star attraction this would meet the codes and conventions of the genre. Listening to the song there is the piano played, I different scope to go with in ideas for the video as there is a possibility of having the artist play the instrument and showing the musical skills. The overall look of the artist has to relate to the similar style as the target market, and smart clothing as appearance would be the main point in this idea. Close up and Medium shots would help to show more of the star and bring about the voyeuristic nature for the female fans. Long Shots and panning shots can be used to show the artist being within the song, which shows a lot about the genre.  A performance based video would be predominately be there to advertise the star and his music.

Idea 4

Alternating form the standard performance  based  video,  I would attempt to challenge the codes and conventions if an R&B music video. Being able to take elements of other genre, such as hip hop and indie bands, although keeping the actor as the star image throughout the video,  you would expect a change. using intextuality to make the video link with target audience who may be interested in movies such as just right, hitch and pursuit of happiness films that are souly based on relationships.  replicating the narrative of the film into the music video and using a similar muse en scene and camera work to illustrate the idea of the film. the use of intextuality is use effectively in the Foster the people's music video ''Helena Beat" where it takes the inspiration of the music video from ''Mad Max" likewise in pursuit if happiness there are points of disequilibrium and a rise from that, landing having both points within the video the vusual text would correspond with the lyrics if the music video.

Mood Board

These are images that represent the things that are associated with the soul genre. With elements such as trending clothing, legendary musicians  and typical instruments that are used in the music genre. This would inspire might thought process of making the digipack, it should offer me various ideas on what to go for.

Analysis of Light Up the Dark

The Lyrics of the music are important in the way that the music video would be made. However Andrew Goodwin states that there are three ways that the lyrics can be interpenetration to the music video. Illustration would taking the lyrics to heart as the correspond with the music video, most of the elements of the music video link with the lyrics and are corresponding with the visual interpretation. Amplification is sequence which add extra meaning, that are not necessarily in the lyrics themselves. What i attempt to do is cooperate this theory to my music video, where i would be able to tell a story with the lyrics and applying them to the visual.

We can light up the dark that’s in our hearts (x2).
I am the light of the world, yeah yeah yeah.
I am a king royalty,
I am the head not the tail, no no no no nooo.
Praise in me, you receive.

Impossible is nothing,
Nothing is too hard when you believe.
Back all light watch your legacy,
Yeah.

So, we can light up the dark that’s in our hearts (x2)
This salt and soul
I’m on a road, ending road.
We can light up the dark that’s in our hearts

I will win, my life won’t die
I live forever in your mind,
I wish upon a tiny star.

Yeah so break loose
Of all the ties and pains all those yesterdays
The world awaits you light to bloom
That we can... yeah yeah...
We can light up the dark that's in our hearts (x2)

This salt and soul
I’m on a road, ending road
I said we can light up the dark that’s in our hearts.

We can light up the dark that’s in our hearts (x2).
I am the light of the world, yeah yeah yeah

In the opening stanza of the song a solo piano piece begins the song, what I would attempt to do is show that and parts of it would be the beginning of the narrative with the main characters from the cut scenes included. The opening 2 lines immediately open the meaning of the song as the artist “Otty” makes the reference to “we” which implies that the relationship between two people. Lighting up the dark, would mean that there is emptiness that is within them and that needs to be rebuilt. Fans are able to incorporate this into their own lives and giving in a chance within a broken relationship. He states that he is the light, meaning that he would be the catalyst of the reconstruction or the development of two people’s love and affection between themselves.  My vision of using contemporary dance I would suggest within the cerography that there is something to instantly inform the viewer the meaning and long shot of the beginning of the performance would allow the audience to understand the format of the  music video.

I am a king royalty,
I am the head not the tail, no no no no nooo.
Praise in me, you receive.

Impossible is nothing,

Nothing is too hard when you believe.
Back all light watch your legacy,
Yeah.

Here he is able to show his dominance and his capability within the relationship, this emphasises his ability to ignite the deep depths of their relationships, showing that he is not afraid to withstand any challenge. King, is portrayed as the important figure in a hierarchy, I would illustrate this by the focus and mixture of close ups and long shots of the male dance as he is associated with the king figure. Tacking control of the situation and the praise would be given to both the parties as they are able to do it together, although showing the earlier superiority and his efforts to make relationship work would encourage men in the same situation and woman needing reinforcement of the good standard of men that are a there who are able to take charge. As the tempo increase I can replicate this with the visuals of the video, by possibly changing the different camera angles, increasing the intensity in the dance performance or use quick clean cut editing as a transition from different scenes, which would sustain the audience engagement with the video.

So, we can light up the dark that’s in our hearts (x2)

This salt and soul
I’m on a road, ending road.
We can light up the dark that’s in our hearts

The repetition of the lyrics reinforces the idea of belonging together and being able to become one again. Typical lyrics of a love song within the soul genre such as “soul” you would expect to hear this preserve the codes and convention of the genre. How would be able to illustrate this stage would be showing a strong relationship between the characters during the cut off scene of the performance, where it illustrates more of the narrative. Contradicting the lyrics to the visual context, I will be able to construct the existing narrative which would develop of the ideas that I can cooperate with music video.

I will win, my life won’t die
I live forever in your mind,
I wish upon a tiny star.

Constant repetition of “I” is there to emphasise the importance of the artist, how he will not relinquish the hope of losing his love, this suggest the desire and drive to succeed to be together. A long shot, medium shot and tracking of the star would be ideal as I am able to link with lyrics and the word “I” is put into context as it shows the star image. And making sure that the lip synch is corresponding with the video is important as the audience are able to see the synchronization of the music.  Similarly to the previous verse the tempo is increase which I would attempt to increase with the video and the way the singer would present that would be the most important factor in increasing the tempo. The way it should be portrayed is to grasp in the audience and to let the go, which is tend to be associated with the soul music.

Yeah so break loose
Of all the ties and pains all those yesterdays
The world awaits your light to bloom

In addition to the increase of the tempo and the volume of the song as this would be the point of most essential section of the song as it implode and drawn the audience’s attention.  I aim to make it the most intense moment of the song.  “Break loose” would sourly suggest that it’s time to let go and in line to this also identified that there is a need to move from the past and walk into the “world awaits your light to bloom.” At the moment I would wish to change the first half of the song, which would be shown in black and white, and create a fusion which would take the music video aspect and correspond with the visuals as the music video, returns to a normal colour.

That we can... yeah yeah...
We can light up the dark that's in our hearts (x2)
This salt and soul
I’m on a road, ending road
I said we can light up the dark that’s in our hearts.

As it approaches the coda the high intensity would have come to an end and the volume and the tempo stated to disintegrate the music video should also do the same. Including the narrative within the music video.

Contacting Artist

I have used social media to good effect in order to contact my artist. With technology evolving and having various ways to communicate with the audience in the forms of Facebook, Twitter and the classical conventional way of e-mail. I managed to contacted my preferred artist via Facebook. Giving the basic information of what I attend to do and the phone call I have explained in detail of the elements that I have to cover over the course. Having contact with the Artist would be helpful in terms getting the opportunity for them to inspire me with the vision that they had with song and how i can apply it to the music video. Additional input of the artist idea would allow me to gain a lot more access of what could be appropriate for the music video.  After Several emails, My Artist Otty added specific requirements that I have to follow due the the artist welfare. Insuring that I give the artist and the contributing cast a mention as a part of the credits with in the song. Also I have to show the final cut of the music video to their team, to insure it doesn't portray the artist to a bad image.
